When I was in college, an Orthodox rabbi from Chabad would come by twice a month, round up all the Jewish kids, and do either a Torah study or a Kabbalah class. Kabbalah classes were always fun, because we discussed the more spiritual aspects of the Torah. The rabbi also told us that there were many gentile groups over the years that had taken authentic Jewish Kabbalah and because they couldn’t understand it they ended up twisting it into a sorcery and superstitious magic. I recall one of the groups the rabbi mentioned were the Gnostics.

Jewish Kabbalistic writings are highly symbolic, euphemistic, and poetic. It’s basically written in code. Sometimes during class when the rabbi would read a passage we’d all be thinking “wow, that sounds crazy” or “that makes no sense” or “what the heck is he talking about.” Then he would explain the symbolism and it would all be perfectly clear. It’s hard to explain, but I’ll try. For example, the text would be telling a normal story having nothing to do with farming when all of a sudden it would say “they cut the stalks.” The rabbi would explain that “cut the stalks” meant they made up false Torah doctrine and became heretics. Also, the passage might say “they lay under the fig tree.” The rabbi would explain that “under the fig tree” means they were diligently studying Torah. The text would flow perfectly when he told us the meaning behind the coded language.

What I think happens is Gnostics and other non-Jewish groups take documents they don’t know how to read and don’t have the training to understand, and end up making a lying mess out of things. Rabbis go to school from 5-10 years depending on their specialty. If Charismatics, NAR, and these other guys try to get into Kabbalah they will just end up looking stupid. Jewish Kabbalah as it exists today is for pondering the spiritual aspects of the Torah, and it definitely makes no one into a “god-man.” I think the non-Jewish Gnostic Kabbalah is just a bunch of gibberish from people who don’t know what their talking about.

Dov, as you mentioned, the kabbalistic rabbis go to school from 5-10....
to learn the "true" meaning of the kaballa.
That initself means that it takes special knowledge(gnosis) or education(initiatian) to understand the "underlying" meaning.
This is the defenitian of occultism.

You’re wrong here buddy. My mother is Jewish, my father Christian. Though my parents were not very religious, I have family members who were and was raised with both traditions and I know both sides pretty well. Every authentic Jewish rabbi goes to yeshiva, which is sort of like seminary, for around 5-10 years to become a rabbi. Some groups within Judaism such as Chabad Lubavich also study Chassidut and Kabbalah, the spiritual aspects of Torah. Not all study Kabbalah but some do.

It’s a statement made by someone who has no cultural background within Judaism and has little theological training. You’re just simply not in a position to make any substantive remark on the matter. If you want to make statements about Gnostic Kabbalah and other gentile aberrations of Jewish teachings then go ahead.

I agree with you that the message of salvation through Jesus is simple. No person needs to be a scholar, theologian, or convert to Judaism to be saved. Belief in Jesus and salvation are simple. When the Jewish Apostles were deciding how the wanted to teach the gentile nations about salvation and the Messiah, they also kept it simple as noted in Acts 15.

However, the Bible itself is far from simple and it does require a level of scholarship to have a firm understanding. A firm understanding also requires some knowlege of Jewish culture and Judaism, given that every book of the Bible was authored by a Jew/Hebrew (including Luke who was a proselyte), and birthed from a Jewish Messiah, Jewish culture, religious thought, and worldview.

If someone is going to rise to the level where they say they have the authority to correct doctrine, teach sound doctrine, and distinguish between true and false, then YES they must rise to some level of scholarship.

Paul authored most of the letters in what we call the New Testament. Paul was able to do this and correctly explain Biblical principles because he was a great scholar and learned man. The disciples were also great scholars and learned men contrary to popular belief that they were simple fisherman and artisans. Except Paul, they did not study in the same schools as the Pharisees, but they were still learned men.

For those who read their Bibles they know that most of the twelve Apostles before studying under Jesus, were students of Jesus’ cousin John the Baptist. John the Baptist was a member of the priesthood, a learned priest, the son of a priest, and the descendants of priest who were all scholars of the Bible. As a side note, according to church history the Apostle John, who authored Revelation, was also a Levite like John the Baptist, a learned priest, and the descendant of priests from a long tradition of scholarship.

Paul, being a scholar himself, understood the importance of education when he told his main pupil Timothy to “study” so he would “rightly divide the world of truth.” And further expressed this sentiment when he wrote the words: “from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work” (2 Tim. 3:16).

For those who do more than just read words on a page with no understanding, they realize the “word of truth,” “sacred writings,” and “scripture,” Paul highly regarded and claimed Timothy knew from childhood are the so-called Old Testament. What we call the New Testement in many cases wasn’t even written yet, and what was written were letters to churches and first and second hand accounts of life with Jesus.

Salvation is simple. The Gospel message that Jesus is the saving Messiah is simple. But the Bible is not just some simple text to be glossed over. So without apology I will say, if one wishes to be an authoritative teacher and properly distinguish between true and false then YES they must rise to at least some level of study and scholarship.

The Charismatic and Pentecostal traditions are rife with anti-intellectual, anti-study, anti-scholarship attitudes and rhetoric. They dumb down everything and teach some pretty far-out stuff. This is why so much weird doctrine and teaching is accepted and goes unchecked in those circles. Please don’t fall into the same trap.

One doesn't have to have a thorough theological training in kabalah, talmud, judaism in order to discern Gods word from tradition, occult lore, magic and plain speculation because that's what we're talking about here.

Lets get it clear here that when Paul wrote "sacred writings, scriptures" he noted the old testament, aswell as the writings of the apostles, and not writings like kabballah, as this is far from inspired by the Living Word.

Nowere in the bible can we find advise to study the kabballah, and no indication atall that John the baptist, or Paul valued these writings as Godly inspired.

Once again you are very wrong. The Apostles were not “Sola Scriptura” or “Scripture Only” like modern Christians are today. In fact they were far from it. They had a ton of Jewish historical writings and oral tradition they drew upon when teaching and writing letters to the churches.

You may not like to hear this. You’re probably right now wanting to scream “HERESY!” But, if you stop to think for a second, you’ll realize that there are many, many concepts the Apostles expounded in detail upon in their letters that have absolutely NO direct link to the Old Testament.

Just as one example (there are many more), Paul went into great detail in more than one of his letters about the resurrection. He talked about the order of the resurrection, the quality of bodies, the timing, the last trumpet, meeting in the air, etc. You’re saying to yourself: “that was personal revelation that came to Paul directly from the Holy Spirit.” Yes Paul received personal revelation, but there are also extensive Jewish writings that exist even to this day that detail many of the exact same things Paul taught the churches about the resurrection and other subjects. Is this a coincidence? No not at all.

To disprove the “Scripture Only” myth, below are a few concepts in the New Testement that you will find nowhere in the OT. But you will find these written about extensively in so called Jewish apocryphal writings and commentary.

“Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth” (2 Tim. 3:8).

“And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day,” (Jude 6).

But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil and argued about the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him a railing judgment" (Jude 9).

“For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment” (2 Pet. 2:4).

"Moses was educated in all the learning of the Egyptians, and he was a man of power in words and deeds… And he supposed that his brethren understood that God was granting them deliverance through him, but they did not understand” (Acts 7:22, 25).

It’s probably hard for you to understand that there is a huge body of Jewish historical writings (commentary, apocrypha, targum, kabbalah, etc.) that thousands of years ago and even today rabbis have no problem speaking about when explaining the Bible. What is called the Old Testament was not even fully canonized until the Council of Yavneh around 90 A.D. under Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakkai.

I didn’t start seriously reading the New Testament until midway through college. I had always been told how anti-Jewish it was so I never really went into any depth. To my great surprise, once I started seriously studying, I found the NT to be extremely Jewish. Totally Jewish in fact, and filled with many, many things I had read and learned in Judaism and other Jewish writings. There is oral tradition, targum, kabbalah, commentary, all sorts of stuff in the NT.

My story isn't unique. This is typical of many Jews who in adulthood start to read the NT. They realize how Jewish the book is despite being told all there lives the book is not Jewish. I'll you'll call me a heretic for saying this.

Sola scriptura is not because of rigidity but to set a much needed boundry. The bible as we know it today is more than sufficient for those who seek after Yeshua/God and for the disciples of Yeshua to live a godly life. Not te become wise in our own eyes but to learn to depend on God and fear God. There are so many, many munuscripts out there that either confirm, oppose or give new information. In the end after research and experience the true disciple of Yeshua will confirm that sola scriptura is safest lest one become entangled in false ideologies and drift away from the true faith. It's no coincidence that scripture is as it is today.

This is my opinion on AUTHENTIC Jewish Kabbalah: it is ancient oral commentary on the Torah, Prophets, and Writings (i.e. Old Testament) that the rabbis decided to record before the teachings were lost. It is basically rabbinic commentary on the Bible.

Non-Jewish Cabala or Qabalah, as it is often referred to, is Gnosticism, gibberish, misinterpretation, and sorcery.

The Bible is the inspired Word of God.

Well done response. Thank you for posting it. I shy away from the Kabbalah due to the obvious "goyim" understanding of its nature. I am glad to hear an ethnic Jew make some sort of statement in the Christian community regarding these matters. My sister is orthodox and has made it clear to me that what the secular considers "Kaballah" is nothing at all what the rabbis study and teach. Regardless, I do not support it. There is too much evidence proving that - whether it is a hijacked form or just the foundation of high level mysticism - that the Kabbalah has very powerful influence over the world (and Jesus said warned to examine the fruit). Intensively studying the Torah and Oral Laws with such mechanisms has not lead many Jews to the truth that is in Jesus Christ. "Always learning but never coming to the knowledge of the truth." Even my sister, who is not an ethnic Jew, but converted through marriage, is skeptical of the mystical factions of orthodox Judaism.

Nevertheless, thank you for your response. It is always good to see someone eloquently defend the truth and help the confused move away from their ignorant bigotry.
